On short- and medium-haul Economy Basic, Austrian lets you bring only the small under-seat item. Miles & More HON Circle and Senator members, and Star Alliance Gold holders, may add one carry-on bag even on that fare.
Austrian checks amount, weight and size at the airport, and any bag you bring to the gate counts as carry-on, even if you also have checked baggage. A bag that breaks the rules is taken at check-in or at the gate and sent to the hold at your cost, EUR 60 to 110 depending on the route and payable by credit card only, which Austrian says is well above the price of checked baggage booked in advance.
On very full flights, Austrian may email you before departure to offer a free drop of a compliant bag at check-in. Keep valuables, medicines and battery devices with you.
