What to know about Ryanair carry-on rules
- Ryanair's All fares fare has no free cabin bag, while 66 of the 80 verified airlines we track include one with a published size.
- Tested against Ryanair's 55×40×20 cm limit, a standard US carry-on of 22 × 14 × 9 in (55.9 × 35.6 × 22.9 cm) is 2.9 cm (1.1 in) too big on the depth (and 1 other limit).
- On Ryanair, a typical European cabin case of 55 × 40 × 20 cm (21.7 × 15.7 × 7.9 in) fits exactly at the limit on the length (limit: 55×40×20 cm).
- Ryanair publishes 2 different allowances: 1 of the 2 include a cabin bag; on All fares the cabin bag is a paid extra.
Our notes on Ryanair
If your bag is a 10 kg case the size of an overhead-locker bag, Ryanair offers two ways to take it, and the difference is where it travels. With Priority & 2 Cabin Bags, it stays with you in the overhead locker and you board first through the Priority queue at the gate. With a 10 kg Check-in Bag, you hand it over at the check-in desk before security and it flies in the hold, leaving you with only your small bag.
Ryanair's policy puts no weight on the small bag: what matters is that it fits under the seat in front of you. A soft backpack that bulges once it is full can end up deeper than allowed, so check its size after packing, not before.
An infant has no cabin bag allowance, but a 5 kg baby bag and two items of baby equipment travel free.
